barcarollefrom-les-contes-dhoffmann-1
Barcarolle (from The Tales of Hoffmann)

Jacques Offenbach (1819 - 1880) was a French composer of German origin. He is generally considered one of the most important creators of operetta, a term he himself never used; he preferred to speak of opéra bouffe or opéra comique. His well-known works include "Orphée aux enfers", "La belle Hélène", "Barbe-bleue" and "La vie Parisienne". Offenbach wrote only one opera that is still performed today: "Les Contes d'Hoffmann", his swan song, which was not entirely finished at the time of his death. Ernest Guiraud completed this work and was clever enough to take a song from an earlier Offenbach composition ("Les fées du Rhin" from 1863) and add it as a barcarolle. This proved to be a masterstroke! This barcarolle has indeed become world-famous. A barcarolle (also called a gondola song, the Italian "barca" means boat) is a folk song sung by Venetian gondoliers, or it is a piece of music composed in that style, usually in a swaying 6/8 meter. Great classical masters gladly included barcarolles in their operas (Weber, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi), but as an independent composition, the barcarolle is also very popular (e.g., Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Bartók, Fauré, Glazunov, Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, Bernstein).
