This work was written for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous lion carved from red sandstone that defines the face of the French city of Belfort. The 22-meter long and 11-meter high lion symbolizes the heroic French resistance during the siege of Belfort by the Prussians in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and a three-part choir to the wind orchestra, using texts specially written for this occasion by Jean Ehret.
