Bijdehandjes Lesson Book 1 by Erna Fransen and Mieke de Jong is an aural piano method for young beginners from around five years old. The method starts with singing and listening: the 25 songs are first sung and then taught on the piano. This way, children develop their musical ear simultaneously with their first piano skills.
The structure progresses step-by-step from two notes to three, four, and five-note songs. Much attention is paid to the development of the left hand, playing with both hands, and playing together with the teacher. Each composition is spread over two pages: one with instructions and musical examples for the teacher or parent, and one clear page for the student.
A special part of the book are the rhythm cards. These can be used for clapping and guessing games and help children recognize whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes by ear and then read them. Students also learn to name the keys C, D, F, and G and transpose simple melodies by ear to other starting notes.
The method is in Dutch and is intended as a playful first introduction to piano lessons. Published by Broekmans & Van Poppel under number BP1739.
