Johannes Brahms had already retired and decided to write nothing more until he heard Richard Mühlfeld's clarinet playing in the Meiningen Court Orchestra. Brahms' Clarinet Quintet is filled with autumnal melancholy. The sweet Allegro, with the clarinet miraculously rising above the shadow of the cello, soon sounds passionate. The meditative Adagio is disturbed by the wild, improvisation-like arabesques of the clarinet, inspired by Hungarian gypsy music. A sense of desolation resonates through it, which in the final movement quickly gives way to the flowing calm of the Andantino.
