Carol of the Bells (Ukrainian Christmas Carol) for Brass/Woodwind
Carol of the Bells is the most famous of at least four different Christmas carols based on the Ukrainian Bell Carol.
The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work titled Shchedryk, by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). The piece was first performed in December 1916 by students from the University of Kyiv. The melody is based on an old 'shchedrivka', a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year's Eve (January 13) that expresses hope for good fortune in the new year. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added lyrics about the legend that tells of all bells on Earth ringing in honor of Jesus' birth.
