The three-part work Centenary 2019 was commissioned by the Christian brass band De Lofstem from the Frisian village of Sumar to mark the association's centenary in 2019. It is based on a local folk song. The first movement, ‘Awakening Village’, depicts how the village wakes up and comes to life. The second movement, ‘Bintje Monument’, is inspired by a sculpture commemorating headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929), who developed the well-known Bintje potato variety. The finale, ‘Journey into the Unknown’, refers to a concert tour the music association took to the US in 2011. The composer brings together elements of the leitmotif and fragments of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ in the final movement of this work. As a whole, the work consists of various playful and melodic sequences, as well as stirring rhythmic passages.
