In 1872 – two years before he began working on Peer Gynt – Grieg composed the music for Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's play Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd the Crusader). A few years later, he combined the three main orchestral sections into a concert suite of the same name. "In The King's Hall" is the orchestral version of a gavotte for violin and piano written by Grieg in 1867. Wil van der Beek wrote the version for wind orchestra.
