Edward Elgar (1857-1934) originally composed this work in 1887 as a Pie Jesu, when he was organist at St. George's Church in Worcester. He wrote it in memory of the lawyer William Allen, for whom he had worked when he was fifteen years old. The Pie Jesu formed the first part of opus 2 (the other two parts were the Ave Maria and the Ave Maris Stella).
A few years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement is by Robert van Beringen, who skillfully preserved the atmosphere of the composition.
