Jacob de Haan made this arrangement for wind band, optionally with a male choir. The original Christmas carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He composed Silent Night on December 24, 1818, commissioned by the priest of St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, who had written the lyrics for this song himself. Silent Night is romantic in character, features traits of the Austrian folk music of that time, as well as some characteristics of Italian pastoral music.
