Missa Katharina is a mass consisting of the ordinary parts: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. Instrumental sections have been added: a Prelude, Offertorium, and Postlude, as well as an Alleluia and an Amen. The Prelude is intended for the beginning of the mass, the Offertorium comes between the sermon and the communion service, and the Postlude comes at the end of the mass. The Alleluia is sung after the Gloria; the Amen follows the Agnus Dei. There are several performance options:
- an integral version;
- a version with only the ordinary parts;
- a version without a choir, with only three instrumental parts;
- a performance of each individual part.
Missa Katharina was initially written for choir, soprano solo, and concert band. The mass can also be performed with choir and organ or piano. If no suitable soprano can be found, the sopranos of the choir can take on the solo part.
