This suite tells the story of John Stewart, the Duke of Albany (the old name for the Kingdom of Scotland), who lived from 1484 to 1536, and of Anne de la Tour, Countess of Auvergne. The first, majestic part is about John Stewart, who travels to Auvergne to marry Anne de la Tour. Part two begins beautifully and romantically, reflecting the romance of Anne and the Duke, but also conveys desperate loneliness. The festive and stately finale describes the construction of a chapel and the dancing and merrymaking of the people.
