Every year the Geuzenpenning is awarded. This is to a person or organization that has made a special contribution to democracy and against dictatorship, racism and discrimination. In the sixteenth century, the Geuzen fought against the Spanish occupation. In the Second World War, there was also a resistance group that called themselves by that name. Some of them were sentenced to death in 1943. Just before the execution of the sentence, they sang Psalm 43. It is precisely this psalm that Jan de Haan incorporated into his opening work Geuzen Medal Fanfare. He wrote it for the twenty-fifth award ceremony.
