The client for this work has multiple connections to the composer. This has made By the River a very personal and impressive work. The first part has a pastoral character, describing the rural nature of what is fundamentally an industrial area. In stark contrast, a dynamic allegro follows with allusions to Leonard Bernstein. All registers of the modern wind orchestra are brought to bear in By the River. But the audience is also put to the test if they want to fully grasp all the thematic and melodic elements of this varied work..!
