Seeing as most bands participating in the annual NBK(Dutch Brass Band Championships) have many young musicians in their ranks, this work is predominantly youthful in character - especially in the outer sections. An arpeggio figure forms the basis of the main theme and appears in all registers. A second musical idea dialogues with this main melody: together they flesh out the opening section of the work. This is followed by a chorale-like middle section: step by step, short and then increasingly longer melodic fragments are strung together until the chorale, in its full splendour, resounds integrally at measure 205. There are no true solo passages in this work, but various small chamber music combinations offer several musicians the opportunity to showcase their musical qualities. In the final movement, a number of musical building blocks from the opening section are revisited and further developed, concluding in a majestic finale.
