Jan van der Roost: Rikudim

Rikud means dance in Yiddish, and with the plural form -im, this title therefore means nothing more and nothing less than "Dances". Thus, Rikudim forms a 4-part suite of Jewish-inspired dances, although it should be noted that these are not arrangements of existing folk music, but rather original compositions in the style of. By using oriental-sounding intervals, irregular time signatures, and a typical instrumentation (woodwinds), the composer succeeds in weaving both a touch of melancholy and a specifically Jewish feel into this music. The clearly defined themes and the sometimes surprising, yet also natural-sounding harmonies make these stylized folk dances very expressive.
