Jan van der Roost: Song of Hope

Jan van der Roost: Song of Hope (Harmony)2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11, a severe earthquake struck the northeast of the country, causing an enormous tsunami and immense damage to people and nature. The ensuing problems with the Fukushima nuclear reactor exacerbated the misery: a dark page in the country's history. Unfortunately, it is an almost inevitable consequence that in such dramatic circumstances, the cultural system also (and especially) suffers a significant blow. This was also the case in Japan: several high school bands in the affected region lost their rehearsal space and/or instruments; it will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired – and it will also be difficult to recover mentally. With the latter in mind, Yutaka Nishida (compiler of the radio program The Bandwagon) asked a few composers to write a simple piece that could be played by many orchestras. Coincidentally, a similar request also came from the OSAKAN Philharmonic Winds, with whom Jan Van der Roost conducted a concert on September 25, exclusively dedicated to his own works. Song of Hope was then premiered and the piece immediately resonated with performers and audiences: after a rather dark start in the lower register, it evolves into a more optimistic and open ending. Indeed, there is hope for better times!
