Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging (Mary walked through a thorn forest) is a traditional German Christmas carol. The oldest known version was recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. In the mid-nineteenth century, it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thuringia, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was included in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. Maria durch ein’ Dornwald ging has inspired many arrangers to write choir arrangements. Michael Bilkes incorporated the well-known melody into an atmospheric arrangement for concert band.
