In the operetta Orphée aux Enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld), Offenbach parodies the famous story of Orpheus and Eurydice from ancient Greek mythology – indirectly, however, he denounces the complacency of many of his contemporaries. The overture is not entirely Offenbach's work; Carl Binder added several pieces to it for a Viennese production in 1860, and these have remained in it ever since. Wil van der Beek made a transcription for concert band of the infectious overture – which naturally includes the famous cancan.
