The famous chorale "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" (Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming) was written by the German composer Michael Praetorius (1571-1621). Roland Kernen has written several variations based on this chorale, which together form the magnificent work Christmas Variations. After a catchy, fortissimo opening, the chorale is presented in various ways. The first variation is a light-hearted treatment of the chorale. The subsequent stately variation provides a beautiful contrast to this. After a short interlude, the finale follows, in which the chorale is heard twice more in its full glory. The work thus concludes as majestically as it began
