The Shelford Channel is the definitive evolution of Rupert Neve's classic console modules such as the 1073, 1064, 1081, and 2254, refined for the modern studio based on over fifty years of design experience.
The channel strip combines Rupert Neve's first new transformer-gain class-A microphone preamplifier in forty years, the inductor EQ from the Shelford 5052, a diode bridge compressor, variable Silk saturation, and a new dual-tap transformer output, operating at twice the voltage of vintage originals. The result: a rich, recognizable sonic character with precise detented controls for recall and a versatility that classic modules never had.
The microphone preamplifier uses a directly coupled transformer input that itself provides gain, for the first time in forty years. The custom RN4012 transformer delivers the first 15dB of gain, with the remaining 72dB coming from discrete class-A amplifier blocks via stepped attenuator and precision trim pot. This direct coupling provides the smooth high and low frequencies of the best-known vintage modules, with low noise and superior isolation. Also present: sweepable HPF (20-250Hz), Mic/Line selection, 48V phantom power, and polarity reversal.
The dual-tap output stage with the RN2042 transformer offers both a high- and low-headroom tap. High-headroom delivers a pure sound at high levels; low-headroom utilizes the full voltage range with characteristic harmonic coloration, without clipping most interfaces. The variable Silk circuit controls harmonic content and saturation: disengaged for modern and clear, engaged well beyond the vintage 1073. Silk Red emphasizes high frequencies, Silk Blue the low.
The Hi-Z DI input uses the same discrete class-A FET transformer topology as the RNDI, now with the RN4012 transformer directly providing gain for the mic pre. This delivers exceptional clarity for high-impedance sources, with solid low-end presence and smooth highs, plus a passive THRU output.
The three-band inductor EQ combines Rupert Neve's best classic circuits. The low band (based on the 1064) is switchable between shelf and peak filter for extra punch. The mid band (based on the 1073) enriches vocals and instruments with a proportional Q response. The high band is a hybrid vintage/modern capacitor topology for richer sound and more control. Each section operates with low-feedback class-A electronics; the circuit itself is a contemporary design, not a clone.
The diode bridge compressor builds on classics like the 2254, expanded with full-wave rectification and new controls. Where the VCA compressor in the Portico II offers transparency, the Shelford Channel is about colorful, direct compression with new precision. Controls: TIMING, THRESHOLD, RATIO, BLEND, MAKE UP GAIN, FAST, HPF to sidechain, pre-EQ, bypass, sidechain insert, and stereo link.
TIMING is a six-position switch (Auto, Fast, Medium Fast, Medium, Medium Slow, Slow) that simultaneously controls attack and release; FAST accelerates the attack in any position. RATIO has 6 steps (1.5:1 to 8:1), THRESHOLD 31 steps (-25dBu to +20dBu), MAKE UP GAIN 31 steps (-6dB to +20dB). HPF TO SC moves the HPF to the sidechain; SC INSERT allows targeted EQ on the sidechain signal. BLEND gradually mixes the compressed signal with the original for subtlety and precision.
The internal power supply operates with +/-24V rails via IEC connection, double Rupert Neve's vintage design, for more dynamic range and better noise performance. Auto-switching, globally usable on 100-240VAC, 50-60Hz.
