Like Rikudim, Puszta, and Balkanya, also by Jan Van der Roost, this colourful and varied suite is written in the style of traditional Russian music, without using existing melodies or themes as a basis. Tanczi contains a few surprising twists, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows: a fairly fast dance with beautiful themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and exudes some melancholy, although passion flares up again during a more dynamic middle section. Finally, the Troika takes us on a reindeer sleigh through a vast snowy landscape. A work full of variety!
