The melody of Friedrich Silcher's (1789-1860) Schifferlied (boatman's song) is originally a barcarolle from Provence. Silcher arranged it and included it with his own lyrics in one of his collections of folk songs. It is therefore also known by the title Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus – the first line of the lyrics. Silcher's version of the Schifferlied is characterized by clarity and simplicity, in keeping with the Viennese classics. In this arrangement for wind orchestra, this approach was respected and the same style maintained. The work can also be performed with male choir (TB).
