This is an ode to the first worldwide hit in 5/4 time – Take Five by saxophonist Paul Desmond. The basic rhythm is identical to that of Take Five, namely a group of three followed by a group of two quarter notes. Besides the rhythm, Gimme Five reflects the semi-modal approach of Desmond's classic. In the opening passage, phrases of two bars each emerge and are stacked on top of each other, creating the modal effect. A successful composition, which is in no way inferior to Desmond's classic!
