Border Zone tells a musical story about the village of Dinxperlo. Part one begins with the Batavierenrace, a student relay race from the University of Nijmegen to the University of Twente, which crosses the border back into Dinxperlo after a route through Germany. This theme is interspersed with exciting passages that musically portray the smugglers who were active here in the past. Part two depicts the annual procession in Dinxperlo. Part three illustrates the border market that takes place annually on Ascension Day, alternating with chorale-like sounds – based on the smallest church in the Netherlands. Both elements lead the work to a captivating end.
