Jacob de Haan: Pasadena Fanfare

This composition is named after the Californian city of Pasadena, almost bordering the San Gabriel Mountains, in the vicinity of Los Angeles. Pasadena is approached from two contrasting sides in this work. First, there is the expressive element, which is conveyed in the first part of the composition. It depicts the magnificent sculpture gardens (including those of the Huntington Art Gallery) and impressive villas (including Freyes Mansion). This is followed by a swinging section whose style can be described as Latin rock. This is based on the traditional Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, the famous football game preceded by the Tournament of Roses parade. We then return to the initial tempo, which presents a more extroverted version of the expressive theme. The impressive final measures complete the work.
