Rosa Gallica was written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The work focuses particularly on France, where much of the fighting took place. With the title Rosa Gallica (French Rose), the composer wanted to emphasize the poetic symbolism of the rose. The stem represents the passage of years, a dramatic period encompassing the First World War. The thorns refer to the wars, conflicts, and pain of victims. The rose's bloom forms an image of beauty – symbolizing openness to a peaceful world. The composition presents France at the end of the 19th century, then depicts an important role at the heart of the First World War, through to the years thereafter. A spectacular and dramatic new work by Jacob de Haan.
