This work is based on a well-known myth about the city of Zwolle. A dragon lived in one of the deep pools surrounding Zwolle, regularly rising from the water. Each time a live offering was not brought to him, he threatened to destroy the city with his fiery breath. The city was saved by the archangel Michael, who manifested himself in the appearance of a young knight. In an unprecedented battle, he beheaded the monster with his sword. Later, Saint Michael, fighting against the dragon, a symbol of evil and injustice, was given a permanent place on the city's coat of arms. Furthermore, a gigantic statue of the patron saint used to stand at the base of the tall tower above the main entrance of St. Michael's Church. For this composition, the hymn Laudate Dominum was chosen as the musical motif for the archangel. The dragon is musically represented by a fixed series of chords that evoke a somewhat ominous association.
