Le Lion de Belfort (A tribute to the sculpture Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi). This work was written for the official inauguration of the sculpture Le Lion de Belfort: an enormous lion carved from red sandstone that defines the face of the French city of Belfort. The 22-meter long and 11-meter high lion symbolizes the heroic French resistance during the siege of Belfort by the Prussians in 1870-1871. The composer added a narrator and a three-part choir to the wind orchestra, using texts specially written for this occasion by Jean Ehret. The premiere of the composition took place - on the occasion of that inauguration - on November 28, 2010, no less than 130 years after the statue was completed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904).
