Jan de Haan: Metamorphosis for Brass Band

The opening of this three-movement composition presents the thematic material that will appear in various transformations throughout the work. The minor second serves as a leitmotif in this process.

In the lively and sparkling Metamorphosis One, the thematic material is varied extensively. The movement is interrupted by an atmospheric meno mosso containing melodic passages that refer back to the opening theme.

In Metamorphosis Two, many changes occur in tempo and musical character. Seven different soloists each transform the thematic material in their own way. This ultimately results in a passionate, tutti-played section.

The inspiration for Metamorphosis Three is the so-called BACH motif, a musical signature with the notes B-flat, A, C, and B-natural. This characteristic motif arises from the leitmotif (in this case, a descending minor second) and constantly changes its form through various transpositions and transformations. The composer considers this spectacular final movement to be a tribute to one of the greatest and most influential composers in the history of music: Johann Sebastian Bach.
