The work opens with a festive introduction, followed by a fast and rhythmic section in 4/4 time, which, however, largely sounds like a triple 8/8 time. A cadenza heralds a contrasting slow section, which, via a long crescendo, leads to a repeat of the rhythmic opening section. The conclusion of this overture is formed by the "Procession to a New Age". In this "procession to a new age", a completely new theme emerges. Additionally, thematic material from the introduction is used. The main theme from the fast section also appears here once more as a counter-melody to the so-called procession theme.
