Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from Friesland. He was both a farmer and a rebel against the Dutch oppressors, around the year 1500. Was he a hero? Was he a barbarian? However we choose to see him, Jan de Haan certainly found Grutte Pier to be an exciting source of inspiration for a composition. He introduces the national hero to us right at the beginning with an erratic capriccio theme. This is followed by: 'De Arumer Swarte Heap', his band of men who went to battle against the Dutch. A moment of calm ensues. But not for long, because the battle breaks out in full force! The work ends with a disillusioned Grutte Pier retreating...
