This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary II, a work from 1694. In this fantasia, the main theme is followed by several seamlessly transitioning sections that elaborate on or contrast with the theme. Although the thematic material sometimes deviates to such an extent that the work acquires its own distinct character, the composer consistently returns to fragments of the original.
