The Dutch Patriot Era was a period of political instability in the 1780s. The country was governed by regents who were more concerned with their own self-interest than with advocating for the people. During this revolutionary period, the patriotic, republican Patriots stood in direct opposition to the Orangists. A civil war followed, in which the Patriots were defeated and driven out by a Prussian army. The composition The Patriots is abstract music, but the Patriots do serve as the inspiration for this work. The thematic material is based on the Geuzen song 'Merck toch hoe sterck'. The accompanying powerful minor melody, which originated in the Eighty Years' War, remains recognizably present throughout the work, but constantly changes character.
