This work is a direct successor to Contrasts, written in 1986. Not only did the final chord of the latter work form the starting point for this composition, but Variations on a Chord is also Jan de Haan's second concert work for brass band written since then. The different variations are based on a sustained theme. In this theme, preceded by a majestic introduction, the characteristic of the so-called minor-major (or unnamed) seventh chord is clearly recognizable. This is followed by eight variations on this theme, each very different in character.
