Fortuna for trumpet and piano was commissioned by Belgian trumpeter Manu Mellaerts. The title refers to the Roman goddess Fortuna, who in mythology represents fate. The piece is characterized by a modern yet not avant-garde style, through which composer Jan Hadermann taps into a wide variety of musical expression. Because of this – and its duration of approximately nine minutes – Fortuna fits perfectly into a conservatory student's examination repertoire.
