The three originally composed dances in this suite are characterized by the characteristic tempo and mood changes of folk music from the Balkan states. In Myriam Mees’ arrangement for accordion orchestra, various tone colors are featured within a versatile alternation of registers. The rich sounds combined with the different bellows techniques make this work a unified whole, both technically and musically. Balkanya is attractive for the entire orchestra to play – and, moreover, very accessible to the general public.
