This work was written to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, which also commissioned the piece. The historic city of Takayama attracts countless domestic and international visitors every year, not only for its abundance of well-preserved old houses and buildings, but also because several historical parades take place there annually. As they move through the city, centuries-old melodies echo, played on wooden flutes and accompanied by muffled drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic-sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic scale, which further develops throughout the piece. In this spirited work, Eastern and Western influences alternate, resulting in a captivating and overwhelming musical effect!
