Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 - 1764) is mainly known today as a music theorist. However, he was also a remarkable composer. He became fascinated by two American Indians from Louisiana, whom he met in Paris. Following this encounter, he wrote the harpsichord piece Les Sauvages (The Savages). Later, he incorporated this work into his opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes as the Dance of the Great Peace Pipe. This successful arrangement honors the spirit of the original but approaches it from a new angle.
