Jupiter surprisingly opens with percussion and 'high woodwinds'. This original introduction is followed by a broad melodic theme in the middle register, and gradually other instrumental groups join in, so that the entire orchestra is eventually featured. As in comparable marches by Jan Van der Roost (e.g., Arsenal, Mercury, Minerva, Helios and Artemis), the trio melody in Jupiter is melodic and lyrical in character. Harmonically, unusual things happen – a trademark of the composer.
