Introduction to Improvisation is intended for musicians who want to do more than just play notes from sheet music. No specific prior knowledge is required for the first part, other than proficiency in a few simple scales over a decent range. The student must also be able to read music. Part 2 is suitable for those who have had at least five years of lessons and have mastered the material from Part 1. Introduction to Improvisation extensively covers improvising over chords. Listening exercises, analyses of keys and different styles – along with their associated musical forms and patterns – are also included in this method. Each of the two books comes with a CD containing listening and play-along exercises to help you improvise over increasingly complex structures until you master the art of improvisation independently.
