The history of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century is the theme of this work. This place is now primarily associated with its nuclear power plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is therefore a metaphor for the 'work' that is realised by 'power', in a negative sense (war) and in a positive sense (reconstruction). Power also plays an important musical role in this work, contrasted with vulnerability.
