Piet Swerts composed Dance of Uzume at the request of top Japanese saxophonist Nobuya Sugawa. The work is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger at her brother Susanowa, the god of storms, the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. However, Uzume, the goddess of joy, manages to lure the sun goddess out of the cave with a wild dance. The laughter of the other gods piques Amaterasu's curiosity, and with her appearance, light returns to Earth. This story is masterfully reflected in the music.
