With two channels, 72dB of gain, sweepable high-pass filters and Rupert Neve’s custom dual-tap output transformers with variable Silk saturation, the 5211 is a versatile and uncompromising preamp for any signal chain. Put simply: this is everything a microphone preamplifier should be.

The 5211’s transformerless input stage captures signals with pristine clarity. Combined with its variable Silk circuit and dual-tap output transformer, it delivers tones ranging from rich and warm to crystal-clear and detailed.

The 5211’s balanced microphone input uses a Transformer-Like-Amplifier (T.L.A.) design for pure, high-quality signal reproduction. With 72dB of gain, a switched controller in 6dB steps, and a ±6dB trim, it offers unprecedented control. Each channel also features selectable polarity, +48V phantom power, and an adjustable high-pass filter (20-250Hz).

Silk enriches the harmonic character of the output stage, giving it the distinctive Rupert Neve sound. It reduces negative feedback, saturates the transformer, and adjusts the frequency spectrum for a warm, musical tone. At higher gain, the Silk effect becomes even more intense, bringing to life the undeniable warmth and depth of classic Neve designs.

The custom Shelford Channel transformer provides both full-headroom (+26dBu) and -6dB outputs, allowing engineers to utilize classic transformer saturation without overdriving downstream equipment. A robust internal power supply ensures stable performance worldwide, all housed in a sleek 19” 1U chassis with the distinctive Shelford blue finish.

Features

MIC GAIN
  • A 12-way precision rotary switch controls gain from 0 to 66 dB in 6 dB steps.
TRIM
  • Continuously variable +/-6 dB level control.
SILK / TEXTURE
  • Pushing the Silk button engages the red Silk circuit, which reduces negative feedback on the output transformer, adding harmonic content as the texture increases. Red Silk accentuates saturation in the midrange and high frequencies, similar to the red silk mode on the Shelford Channel. Manipulating the Texture control, the amount of Silk can be changed from practically absent to roughly 10 times the amount of coloration / distortion found in Silk from the original Portico Series. With Silk / Texture engaged, the unit’s distortion characteristic and harmonic content are very reminiscent of many of Rupert’s vintage class-A designs.
Level Meter
  • An eight-segment LED bar-graph meter displays output level (pre-Silk) from -30 dBu to +22 dBu.
Polarity
  • Reverses the polarity of the input signal.
High Pass Filter
  • Continuously variable from 20Hz to 250 Hz, and engaged with the HPF button.
Phantom Power
  • Provides 48V phantom power to microphones.
-6dB Output
  • A secondary lower-headroom tap off of the output transformer, designed to allow engineers to fully drive the 5211’s output without clipping converters and other devices.
