The 5254 Dual Diode Bridge Compressor reinterprets Rupert Neve's legendary diode bridge circuit with modern precision, more control, and more punch for tracks, mixes, and masters.

Since the early 1970s, Rupert Neve's diode bridge compressors have been renowned for their punch and their ability to gel drums, instruments, and stereo mix buses—often at the expense of ease of use and flexibility. Fifty years later, the 5254 offers that same classic circuitry with contemporary precision. While RND VCA compressors are built for demanding clarity, the 5254 delivers harmonically rich, colorful compression that makes a clear sonic statement. The dynamics circuit is derived from the award-winning Shelford Channel and operates dual mono or stereo, featuring Rupert Neve Designs' proprietary transformers and Class A electronics in a compact 1U 19" enclosure.

The TIMING control offers six selectable settings for a wide range of applications, a significant departure from the fixed, slow attack of the vintage originals. FAST and MF capture fast transients such as drums, plucked instruments, and quick vocals. MED and MS operate with a slightly slower attack and release for more transient passage. SLOW and AUTO are significantly slower with complex, non-linear release times for more subtle, less audible level control. Faster settings generate more control voltage ripple and thus more harmonic color; slower settings flatten the control voltage for more transparent compression. Due to their topology, these time constants also automatically adapt slightly based on ratio, threshold, and source material.

Thanks to the built-in parallel compression via the BLEND control, a small amount of extreme compression can be mixed with the unaffected signal—for an enhanced but natural result that preserves dynamic range, color, and punch.

Further control comes from RATIO (1.5:1 to 8:1), THRESHOLD (-25dBu to +20dBu), and GAIN (-6dB to +20dB) for make-up gain. The S/C HPF (12dB/octave, continuously variable from 20Hz–250Hz) makes the compressor less sensitive to heavy low frequencies, preventing a muddy response. The S/C INSERT provides an always-active send/return on the sidechain, to be used for targeted EQ or for injecting an external key signal for ducking. LINK couples the control voltage between both channels for a stable center image on stereo sources—although it's worth listening to the unlinked state as well, as linking can sometimes restrict the effective stereo width.
