The 543 brings the subtle, musical compression and brick-wall limiting of the renowned Portico 5043 to the 500-series format.
Each module offers a fully controllable compressor-limiter with individually adjustable threshold, attack, release, make-up gain, and ratio, complemented by a sidechain HPF, switchable feed-forward/feedback modes, and Peak/RMS detection. Built around Rupert Neve's custom transformers, the 543 delivers a combination of warmth, flexibility, and precision for diverse sources. With the compressor disengaged, the 543 functions as a high-quality, transformer-coupled line amplifier; two units can be linked for stereo operation. The enclosure adheres to standard 500-series specifications, with power and I/O supplied via the rack.
At its core is a highly accurate, low-noise VCA with no inherent tonal character, where a portion of the audio signal is rectified and smoothed into a control voltage. The speed and precision of this response (attack and release) largely determine how the compressor sounds, and can be fully adjusted to taste on the 543.

- F/F + F/B: switches between Feed Forward (more pumping, envelope-shaping) and Feed Back (smoother, more natural)
- Make-up gain: continuously variable, -6dB to +20dB
- Attack: continuously variable, 20ms to 75ms
- Release: continuously variable, 100ms to 2.5s
- RMS/Peak: switches between RMS detection (perceived loudness) and Peak detection (direct waveform, prevents clipping)
- S/C HPF: switchable highpass filter on the sidechain, fixed at 250Hz, affects only the compression signal, not the main output
- Link: links gain reduction circuits for stereo operation
