The 545 is an all-analog feedback suppressor that audibly clarifies stage microphones and instruments without affecting the source's tone.
Based on the circuit of the award-winning Portico 5045 (now proven on tours, in arenas, churches, and broadcast studios worldwide), the 545 is a mono unit for vocals or instruments, suitable for any 500-series rack. By increasing the level of a live microphone signal by up to 20dB before feedback occurs, the 545 effectively reduces feedback without compromising the sonic integrity of the source.
The 545 operates on a different principle than a conventional noise gate, although its behavior is partly similar: both reduce gain as soon as the signal drops below a set threshold. The 545 recognizes when someone is speaking or singing and allows the signal to pass unhindered; as soon as the source stops, the gain is reduced, and with it, the tendency for feedback. This happens entirely analog, without filtering or digital processing — built around Rupert Neve Designs' proprietary input and output transformers for excellent control and sound quality. This makes the 545 the most intuitive and natural-sounding way to reduce feedback on the market.
Thanks to its limited, clear controls, the 545 can also be used without an experienced engineer, with quick adjustments possible during the show itself:
- Engage — illuminated push-button that activates the Primary Source Enhancer effect
- Active — LED indicating when the 545 is actively engaged, i.e., when the input signal exceeds the threshold; indispensable for setting up the device
- Threshold — determines the dBu level at which the Primary Source Enhancer engages
- Depth — sets the maximum amount of attenuation applied once the signal drops below the threshold; from 0dB to -20dB, for the right balance between the audibility of the effect and feedback reduction
- Fast — illuminated push-button that switches between two time constants; by default a slower attack/release as a good starting point for most sources, when pressed a faster response for more dynamic sources or passages
- Peak — illuminated push-button that switches between RMS and Peak detection; when engaged, the 545 responds to fast transient peaks (useful for creative dynamic shaping), when disengaged, the sidechain operates with a slower, average response
