The Master Buss Converter is an A-D converter that raises the bar for conversion quality, with a dual-path analog drive circuit and an exceptionally musical limiter for tracking, mixdowns, and mastering.

After more than seventy years of analog circuit design, it wasn't until the 2018 RMP-D8 Dante preamp that Rupert Neve found a converter worthy enough of his name. The adoption of the RMP as the preferred converter by top-level recording, mastering, and touring engineers led to the development of the MBC, resulting in a new standard for PCM conversion quality.

The analog drive circuit feeding the converter determines the digital sound character — which is why the MBC offers two completely separate signal paths before digitization. For a more powerful, warmer imprint, a custom inter-stage transformer with variable Silk engages classic Neve tonality — Red mode emphasizes harmonics in the mid and high frequencies, Blue mode in the low frequencies, from subtle transformer color to even more character than Neve's vintage modules when Silk/Texture is fully cranked. For maximum transparency, the transformer-less class-A path switches to detailed, clear conversion with a full low- and high-frequency response, without the thin sound that characterizes many transformer-less circuits. This way, any desired sound character is available at the touch of a button, immediately preceding the conversion itself.

The limiter combines a sophisticated compound active release topology with transparency and musicality, suitable as a sculpting tool for mixes and masters, and as a transparent safety limiter for tracking, live, and broadcast. The sidechain HPF (sweepable 20–250Hz) limits the influence of slower low frequencies, the threshold control sets the maximum digital level, and the variable release time constant adapts the response to the source material. A class-A line amplifier adds up to 20dB of pristine gain to drive levels deeper into the limiter; via the Link switch, the limiter operates dual mono or stereo-linked.

The 24-bit/192kHz converters build upon the RMP-D8's design, featuring an internal clock circuit with minimal jitter and phase purity for accurate digital representation of the analog signal. For connectivity, AES, S/PDIF, and TOSLINK outputs are present with simultaneous output to multiple destinations; word clock in/out allows the MBC to be both a master clock and externally synchronizable. Four adjustable reference levels (-14dBFS to -20dBFS), achieved with high-precision resistors and relay-controlled stepped attenuation, ensure seamless alignment within multichannel environments.

For precise level control, two 22-segment meters are present with the highest LED resolution ever in a Rupert Neve Designs product, complemented by 8-segment gain reduction meters for accurate display of transient limiting. Peak hold is adjustable to 1 or 3 seconds.

Features

  • Selectable Analog Drive Paths
  • The very best of Class-A transformerless and custom transformer-coupled designs at the push of a button.
  • Transformer Path with Silk / Texture
  • Add weight and punch with a custom-designed inter-stage transformer before the converter. Silk / Texture allows you to dial in the harmonic content and drive saturation of this signal path.
  • Class-A Transformerless Path
  • Maximizes the clarity and transparency of the input signal.
  • Active Compound Release Analog Limiting
  • Push your levels further with fewer artifacts than plug-ins, and introduce clip-safety for tracking or broadcast.
  • 24-bit/192kHz Reference Conversion
  • Unrivaled analog capture with precision clocking using top-tier chips.
  • Multi-Standard Connectivity
  • Connect to all your digital devices with AES, S/PDIF, and TOSLINK all simultaneously available.
  • Precision Clocking
  • Maximal accuracy with minimal jitter and phase noise, capable of functioning as a master clock or syncing from another master.
