The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four parts. Overture depicts the Golden Age, a period of great prosperity for the Netherlands. This is followed by ¡Adiós españoles!, concerning the end of the Eighty Years' War. Rembrandt’s Night Watch describes the cultural developments of the time: during the Golden Age, Rembrandt van Rijn painted his famous Night Watch. The fourth part, The Admiral, begins with Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter takes the English down a peg; cannon fire can even be heard. This is followed by a fragment of the Dutch song dedicated to Michiel de Ruyter, leading into a fitting finale.
