The Three Musketeers, Op. 8

Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) was commissioned by Miraphone for the Miraphone Tuba Quartet and the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix (Paris). The premiere took place on June 28, 2003, in Guebwiller (France). Even those who have never read a single line of Alexandre Dumas père's mythical novel The Three Musketeers (1844) have at least heard of the four invincible heroes - D'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis - and their unique motto "All for one, and one for all." Dumas' novel has been adapted many times and continues to capture the imagination. The musical structure of Les Trois Mousquetaires is based on specific elements of the characters rather than the plot of the book. Maxime Aulio focused primarily on D'Artagnan, the sensitive, romantic gentleman who is easily seduced by women such as the beautiful Constance Bonacieux and the deceptive femme fatale Milady de Winter. The first movement, D'Artagnan, expresses the personality of this young nobleman from Gascony: heroic and spirited in all circumstances. The second movement, titled Constance Bonacieux, is romantic, charming, and passionate. The third and final movement is as deceptively enchanting as the lady it describes: Milady de Winter.
