This work by Thierry Deleruyelle describes one of the most important events in the history of coal mining: the Courrières mine disaster in northern France. This disaster occurred on 10 March 1906 and is considered the most impactful mine catastrophe in Europe and the second worst in the world. The composition is both emotional and spectacular: in seven contrasting parts, it tells the poignant story of the disaster. Fraternity was the test piece for the Championship Section of the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille; it also commemorates the Courrières disaster, which occurred 110 years ago.
